Penicillium atramentosum RS17 was isolated from the rind of a clothbound cheddar cheese in a cheese cave in Vermont, USA. Penicillium species are commonly found in cheese rind microbiomes and are sometimes inoculated onto cheese in order to produce desired ripening characteristics.
