Lipomyces tetrasporous NRRL Y-64009 is an oleaginous yeast with a natural ability to assimilate a variety of plant-based sugars, glycerol, starch, organic acids, and lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysates. This yeast has been considered an attractive host for lipid production on an industrial scale, because it exhibits high lipid accumulation (over 60%). It has the ability to tolerate low pH and detoxify the inhibitors found in hydrolysates.
